Quick answer
Before buying a bag, cap or clothing item at a Korean duty-free store, confirm the exact product, your shopping eligibility and where you will receive it. Not every purchase requires airport collection. Eligible domestic goods purchased by departing foreign shoppers can be handed over at a downtown duty-free store. Imported goods bought downtown normally follow the designated departure-pickup arrangement.
When can you take the purchase away from the store?
Article 36 of Korea’s current duty-free operating notice provides an on-site handover exception for departing foreign shoppers purchasing eligible domestic goods. The store must check the buyer’s passport, departure reservation evidence and any handover restrictions. Certain goods, including domestic goods subject to drawback, are excluded. See the official notice effective July 1, 2026, Article 36.
Do not use “Korean brand” or “Made in Korea” alone as a test for this exception. Ask the retailer whether the actual product and your purchase qualify. A brand’s country of origin, an item’s manufacturing country and its treatment for duty-free handover are different questions.
Ask: “Can I collect this exact item here today, or must I collect it when departing?”
In Korean: “이 상품은 여기서 바로 받을 수 있나요, 아니면 출국할 때 인도장에서 받아야 하나요?”
For an online order, check the collection options actually offered before paying. Seeing the same product in a downtown shop does not mean that an order assigned to airport collection can simply be collected there.
If your order requires departure collection
Check the retailer’s instructions for the airport or port, terminal, collection counter, required documents and order deadline. Payment confirmation is not confirmation that the goods have been handed over. Keep the collection instructions with your travel documents, and allow time to reach the counter before boarding.
If the flight, departure date or terminal changes, contact the retailer to confirm the order can still be collected. Do not rely on the original instructions after changing your travel plans. Bring your passport and confirmed departure information
Shilla’s shopping guide tells departing shoppers to bring a passport and an e-ticket showing departure information. Check the chosen retailer’s requirements before visiting. On-site handover does not remove the need to establish eligibility as a departing traveler.
Check the product code, not just the brand
A brand appearing in a duty-free store does not establish that it stocks the exact model, color or size you want. Search the full product code and check the individual listing or ask staff. A downtown branch and its online shop may offer different stock.
Record the model code, color, selected size and product name. If a duty-free listing differs by one letter from another website, do not assume the products are identical. Ask the retailer to confirm the correspondence before paying.

Compare the offer you can actually use
Compare the same model, color and size. Check the amount payable after discounts you personally qualify for, the payment currency and any conditions attached to coupons or rewards. A Korean won price printed on a hangtag is not the duty-free checkout price. Future rewards are not an immediate cash reduction.
We do not use a universal discount or final-price formula: offers differ by retailer and shopper. Buying duty-free also does not automatically settle your destination’s declaration and tax requirements. Check that destination’s official customs guidance before travel.
Your final checklist
- Before payment: confirm eligibility, exact item and collection method.
- Ask about cancellation, exchange and return procedures, especially if you leave Korea soon.
- At handover: match the model, color, size and quantity to the order.
- Follow the retailer’s inspection procedure and report visible problems promptly.
- Keep your receipt and collection confirmation. Hide passport and order details before sharing photographs.
